November 2009
Dear Parents and Guardians
The brilliant colors of red, gold and green leaves of autumn are now disappearing. The picturesque leaves are beginning to fall. What memories I have of my childhood during this time of the year. The neighborhood boys would rake leaves into large piles to jump in while the girls created “leaf houses”. The parents in the neighborhood all had the same rule - we could play outside after supper until the street lights came on. I hope that our kids today have the same opportunity to go outside to play and enjoy the fresh, crisp air of autumn.
I also remember the special days that are celebrated in November - Veterans Day ceremony in our village park, Halloween, All Saints Day, All Souls Day and of course Thanksgiving. When I was growing up, Thanksgiving Day in my family was an all day feast for at least 50 people! There was no sign of Christmas shopping until the day after Thanksgiving. It was almost magical - how the stores could be decorated for Christmas in just one day!
Many of the activities of my childhood memories have changed. However, the central theme of this time of year has not changed. It is a time when we are all called to be thankful. To be thankful for the gifts which God has freely given to us.
We are aware that soon this beautiful time of year will be followed by harsh cold and snow. Let us take time to enjoy the remaining autumn days and when we gather with family and friends on Thanksgiving Day we can give thanks to God from our hearts knowing that we are filled with the Love of God!
Prayerfully
Mr. Samuel Zalaccca
