Our Mother of Sorrows
Music Program
"Joyful, joyful, we adore thee, God of glory, God of love."
What an exciting year! This school year, there is a character quality theme for each month, and we have learned music that goes along with the theme. So far, we have done friendship and responsibility. In all classes, we follow the Christian calendar. Each class learns the Mass and prayer service songs appropriate to the season so we can praise the Lord together in worship. We are starting the Christmas musical, "Just Believe", which will be performed on the evening of Dec. 15th, with all classes participating in some way. It is the story of a choir, whose bus driver breaks his leg on the day he is to drive them to sing at the Convention Center. What God does next is a surprise. We will be singing about the importance of keeping Jesus in Christmas and giving Him our hearts as a sign of love. We will learn to "just believe" as we sing this musical.
MOS has several choirs who lead worship at Mass and prayer services, and students who take instrumental lessons and participate in the Diocese orchestra. So both vocal and instrumental experiences are available. We have many musically talented young people being discovered and performing in our school.
Classroom instruments are always of interest, and the lower grades have been using some home made instruments. Some of our students will probably be looking for instruments around the house. MOS has choir chimes, as well as the usual classroom instruments, which our young people are always eager to play.
We combine music and technology. The classes will be using the computer and finding web sites of interest. This fall we focused on Charice, a new star who has been born. You can find her song, "Note to God", by searching Charice and the title of the song. We wrote our own notes to God. Some are now learning the song, which they love after hearing it several times.
Listening is an important part of our program, and we have heard many standard classics as well as popular music. We listened to the opera singer from America's Got Talent, Barbara Padilla, and some of us tried to sing like her. She sang a beautiful "Ave Maria" on one of the shows. It was wonderful that she sang this song on the air.
All classes will continue to be taught with state and national standards, which include singing, listening, evaluating, playing instruments, composing and learning music history in correlation with the other arts and classes. There will be continued integration with other subjects, especially religion. We believe in teaching the whole child and building each one up in the Spirit through music.
We have a great time together in our music program at Our Mother of Sorrows.
