ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Kindergarten - 5th Grade

At Immaculate Conception, everything counts: how the children behave and treat each other in the classroom, the lunchroom, the hallway, and the playground; the respect they show for teachers, fellow students and school personnel; the quality and completeness of the academic work they do at school and at home; and every other facet of school and home life.

We provide a unique community of faith and education. We believe that parents are primarily responsible for the education of their children, but that this responsibility is shared by faculty members and staff, the parishes, and other members of the school community. We all work together to provide our students with: a proven record of superior academic achievement, a disciplined learning environment; and a total education, which includes growth in religious awareness and an appreciation of morals and values.

Immaculate Conception School teaches a traditional curriculum that includes reading, handwriting, math, language arts, social studies, science, religion, computer technology, art, music, Spanish and physical education. Student progress is assessed via four quarterly grade cards, the Terra Nova standardized tests, the New York State assessment tests, and (beginning in 3rd Grade) January and June cumulative subject exams. Immaculate Conception School typically outperforms local public schools on the New York State tests.

Kindergarten

We offer a full-day kindergarten. To enroll in kindergarten, children must be 5 years old by December 1 of their kindergarten year. Our kindergarten class has one teacher and one aide. In the kindergarten, children learn reading and math readiness skills, as well as social, physical, and self-help skills. Unique to Immaculate Conception, children also receive daily instruction in religious education, Spanish and American Sign Language.

The goal of the Elementary program is to provide children with a strong grounding in basic academic skills, as well as a life-long love of learning. Our elementary school teachers have high expectations for all their students and work closely with parents to insure academic success.

Religious Education

Religious education at Immaculate Conception includes learning about basic Catholic beliefs, Christianity, Biblical teaching, saints, and prayer. Students at Immaculate Conception take religion class daily. In accordance with Diocese of Rochester regulations, preparation for Catholic sacraments does not occur in Religion class; it occurs in students’ home parishes.

Technology

Every classroom at has at least one computer. The school also has a large computer lab. Overall, the student/computer ratio in the school is 4:1. Most of the school computers are connected to the Internet and students use this resource for class projects.

Music and Art Education

The music program at Immaculate Conception is taught by the nationally renowned Ithaca College School of Music. The goals of this program are to develop music know-how in singing, instruments, creativity, and music literacy.

Art education is designed to allow students to learn to work in and appreciate various artistic media. Wherever possible, art projects reinforce classroom instruction.
