Our Art Program

I began teaching art in 1985. Throughout my career I have taught in many environments, including public and private schools, community education programs, and even a medium security prison! I currently teach art classes at St. Agnes School on Mondays.
Although I had been teaching for a long time prior to coming to St. Agnes School, January of 2000 was a new beginning for me. I had always wanted to be an Elementary Art Teacher within the community in which I live. Creating the art program we now have at St. Agnes School has been one of the greatest joys of my career. I enjoy our children, I enjoy our families, and I enjoy each of the teachers I work with. St. Agnes is truly a wonderful environment in which to teach and learn.
At St. Agnes School, we believe that Art Class serves as an important tool that fosters a child's ability for self-expression and personal growth. The importance of art as a means of communication is stressed through each classroom activity. Our students are encouraged to develop a personal artistic style that enables them to explore new ways of communication. This is enabled through experimentation with various art media, studying historically significant artists, and understanding themes as they are found in art.
The Art Program provided at St. Agnes is inclusive to both two-dimensional and three-dimensional art projects. Emphasis is placed on art appreciation/history, elements & principles of design, careers in art, how art is useful in our society, and how art styles from different cultures influence our society.
Beyond the classroom, students in 5th & 6th grade receive monthly homework handouts each semester to assist in the development of artistic awareness and perception outside of the classroom. Past K-6 activities have included a community-wide student art show, and a school-wide sculpture created with visiting artist Colin Koots.
Please feel free to email me anytime. Also, I do occasionally post messages under the “Specials” section of our online message board.
