WHAT IS CURRICULUM?

The curriculum is the "work" of the school, and the means by which teachers make a committed contribution to the children assigned to their care.  According to the New York State Department of Education, curriculum is designed for teaching and learning.  In Catholic education, curriculum has another dimension: the reflection of Gospel values.  Curriculum integrates faith and learning, faith and life.

We know that the curriculum supports each child's growth in knowledge and skills, but it also includes each one's development of attitudes, beliefs, values, and behaviors.  The curriculum nurtures moral and spiritual development, and guides each child's social, emotional, and physical progress.

Curriculum is the sum of all the learning experiences the child has and all that the child does independently, as well as with others.  It embraces all aspects of education.

Curriculum includes every classroom activity, every field trip, every school assembly, every library and music program, every prayer experience, every service project.  It also includes the subject matter, teacher planning, instructional strategies, materials, assessment, and  learning environment, inside and outside the classroom.

In order to help each child reach his/her potential, curriculum guides have been developed for our schools.  These follow the Learning Standards of New York State, the recommendations of the Interdiocesan Curriculum Committee, and the guidelines of the Diocese of Rochester.  The curriculum guides used in our Catholic school system are built on the NYS Learning Standards, but add a special dimension in order to teach the whole child.  Great care is taken to provide for growth in Christian beliefs, values, and attitudes throughout the entire school program.
